Seth Winberg
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Rabbi Seth Winberg has been our Executive Director and the University’s Senior Chaplain since 2017. He brings a broad and thoughtful vision for Jewish life that reflects both depth in traditional Torah learning and meaningful engagement with the broader world.
Originally from Canada, he holds degrees from York University and Yeshiva University and is currently a PhD candidate in Near Eastern and Judaic Studies at Brandeis.
After graduating from York, he studied at the Conservative Yeshiva in Jerusalem and at HUC-JIR—experiences that inform his wide-ranging and thoughtful approach to campus leadership.
He received rabbinic ordinations from Rabbi Dov Linzer and Rabbi Yaacov Love in New York, as well as from Rav Natan Greenberg of Bat Ayin and Rav Zalman Nehemia Goldberg of the Jerusalem Rabbinical Court. He trained for the rabbinate with Rabbi Saul J. Berman and his father-in-law, Rabbi Dr. Marty Lockshin.
Rabbi Winberg’s writing has appeared in JTA, The Forward, The Boston Globe, The Jerusalem Post, The Chicago Sun-Times, Lehrhaus, and Hakirah. His advocacy for Israel has received international media attention.
He previously served as Executive Director of Metro Chicago Hillel and as Assistant Director of the University of Michigan Hillel. At Metro Chicago Hillel, he pioneered a model for urban Jewish life and received Hillel International’s highest honor, the Phillip H. and Susan Rudd Cohen Outstanding Campus Award.
He has served on the executive committee of the Chicago Board of Rabbis and on the rabbinic task force of Jewish Women International.
Rabbi Winberg is married to Shoshie. They live in the Boston area with their three children.
